Abstract
This article offers some analysis and criticism of the ubiquitous language and symbolism of ‘equality’ in mathematics. By way of preparation some attention is given to the key processes of idealisation, abstraction, symbolisation and generalisation. The author’s standpoint is in mathematics education, but the criticisms mirror those made recently from a more elevated perspective.
