  • Abstract
The main aim of this article is to focus on philosophical contributions to the use of historical documents in mathematics education. Indeed, an Italian Renaissance document helps us in the process by showing a rich context that almost overshadows the mathematical content. Starting from Levinas’s I-Other relation, connections are established with hermeneutics, and more specifically with the works of Dilthey and Schleiermacher who studied how the author of a document can come out of the text to the reader’s eyes.
