Abstract
The general problem of packing regions of n-dimensional space with shapes composed of unit cells is treated from an algebraic viewpoint. By associating a polynomial in n variables to each shape, and using standard results from commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, information is obtained about the existence and non-existence of such packings
