the talk will analyse various functions of history and philosophy of mathematics as a tool to improve the quality of teachers studies. in the second part these two disciplines will be discussed as a goal in themselves - being an essential part of any mathematical literacy . in a third part i will briefly report some of my concrete experiences from an integration of history and philosophy to teacherss studies at siegen university
